Description

The Institution of Professional Engineers NZ recognises Makohine Viaduct as an important part of NZ's Engineering Heritage. The route for the North Island main trunk railway was the first explored by J Rochfort in 1883-84. In 1886 J.T Stewart located the route as built. Designed by P. S Hay, the Viaduct was the first major structure to be built directly by the Public Works Department, in 1896-1902. The Engineer in charge of construction was S. J Harding. Makohine Viaduct is 72m high and 227m long. with three main spans of 73, 53 and 75m.

It is unique on this route, with sidespans supported by cantilevered extensions of the central span to avoid building foundations in the walls of this steep valley.
