Description
In this image men are making tennis racquets. The location and date of this image are unknown. By the mid 1920s the popularity of tennis reached levels which justified local production of racquets and balls, though most racquets were still being imported from England and the USA. South Australian firm Stevens & Rowe were possibly the first Australian makers to produce high volumes of raquets, and were certainly among early manufacturers. JT Stevens was the former head stringer at UK tennis firm FA Davis while ET Rowe was a local champion player. Based on newspaper articles they produced around 1000 racquets per year over the 1914 -1924 period and distributed them around the country.
