Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Main Street, Strelley. All Saints Church is at the highest point of the village. Most of the houses in the village are over half a mile down the road to the east. When the present Hall was built in the late 18th century the village was removed down the road to make way for the creation of extensive parkland. Note the high wall bounding the park. This is made of a local very impure, coarse grained and flaggy magnesium limestone known locally as 'Bulwell Stone'. It is too soft for most aggregate purposes, but serves as a good ornamental building and rockery stone. It was used extensively in the past as a local building stone, and many walls in the Nottingham area were built of this material including 4574. Note also, the uneven nature of the pavement. This is caused by the inclusion of the Monks Stones, see 604294.
