The city of Gwalior is modern; finestreets, whitewash, and good drainage are its maincharacteristics. There is also a wondrous treasure-housewhich can occasionally be visited, and which con-tains all the priceless jewels of the Scindia family—emeralds, pearls, diamonds, and rubies of enor-mous size and fabulous worth—barbaric splendourswhich once adorned the robes of maharajahs, butfor which the present ruler has little taste.
