Madrid – Cemetery La Florida – Victims of the "Tres de Mayo" 1808 execution

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Panel of azulejos (1982) reproducing “'Los fusilamientos del tres de mayo” by Francisco Goya (created 1813-1814)

< ► https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_3_de_mayo_en_Madrid , quintessence of the napoléonic dictatorship in Spain.

The inscription below the panel reads :
AL VALOR // Y HEROISMO // DE UN PUEBLO
HOMENAJE QUE LE TRIBUTAN // CUANTOS CON ORGULLO // DIGNIFICEN A ESPAÑA
LOOR A SUS // ¡ HEROES !
EXCMO. AYUNTAMINETO // DE MADRID // JUNTA MUNICIPAL DE MONCLOA // MAYO 1982

The focal figure of Goya's painting has also inspired the monument erected in 2008 in Alcaudete

Indiscriminate executions had already taken place the day before, May 2, 1808, at various places : Puerta del Sol, near the Hospital del Buen Suceso, Paseo del Prado, Iglesia de Jesús de Medinaceli, and various other places out of centre.
On May 3 at dawn, the French continued that dirty job in the Parque del Buen Retiro – and here, on the Montaña de Principe Pio.
