Lakes in the Mackenzie delta. In the foreground, a drained lake shows large, low-centered ice-wedge polygons.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Mackenzie delta is an area with thick continuous permafrost. However, unfrozen areas (taliks) may exist below the lakes shown. In the foreground, a small lake has been drained due to erosion (close to the coast). Ice-wedge polygons along contraction cracks slowly developed due to yearly freezing and melting cycles. This lake shows large low-centered polygons, more polygons can be recognized also between other lakes. Photo: Lorenz King, JLU_Giessen.de, August 7,1987
