Summary
[edit]DescriptionMaastricht, Sint-Servaasbasiliek, Oostcrypte, cenotaaf Monulfus & Gondulfus 07.jpg |
English: Detail of the 11th-century cenotaph of Monulph and Gondulph in the East Crypt lapidarium of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The cenotaph was commissioned by provost Humbert († 1086), as was listed on his burrial cross. It was erected in medio ecclesia (in the axes of the church) above the grave(s) of the 6th-century bishops Monulph and Gondulph, traditionally considered to be the founders of the church. The bottomless cenotaph was placed over the open grave and pilgrims could stick their hands through one of twelve diamond-shaped openings in order to (almost) make contact with the ground in which the saints were burried. The cenotaph was burried in the 17th century and rediscovered by the architect Pierre Cuypers in the late 19th century. |
