English: United States Volunteer infantry corps badge made of stamped brass was worn during the Civil War by Sergeant Chesley Billings Tirrell of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company C. Raised panels on the leaves of the clover are marked "FIRST/ MINN/ VOLS". Tirrell participated in all of the 1st Minnesota's battles. After the regiment returned home in 1864, Tirrell re-enlisted as a first lieutenant with the 1st Minnesota Battalion, Company A. At the Second Battle of Petersburg, he received a bullet to the wrist that paralysed his left hand. Tirrell continued to serve in the commissary department until the end of the war. |
