Description SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maj. Gen. Michael J. Walsh, visited the Corps Savannah District Dec. 5-6, 2012. During his visit, Savannah District staff updated the general on key civil works projects such as the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project and gave him a tour of the dredge disposal areas and the freshwater diversion structures at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Walsh also got a birds-eye-view of the Savannah harbor, the Garden City Terminal and surrounding wetlands on a helicopter tour coordinated with nearby Hunter Army Airfield. Walsh supervises USACE civil works nationwide employing 294 officers and 23,033 civilian employees who operate and maintain civil infrastructure valued at $125 billion, including more than 693 dams, 4,254 recreation areas, over 12,000 miles of commercial inland waterways, and approximately 926 harbors.
