Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fossil lycopod in shale from the Pennsylvanian of Pennsylvania, USA.

The fossil plant seen here is the impression and partially carbonized (coalified) remains of a fossil log from Pennsylvania's coal fields. The host rock is mudshale. It comes from the Pennsylvanian-aged Llewellyn Formation, which consists of mixed siliciclastic sedimentary rocks and coal. The scar pattern on this specimen is characteristic of fossil lycopods - the scale trees, a famous example of which is Lepidodendron.

Classification: Plantae, Lycophyta, Lycopodiopsida

Stratigraphy: float sample from the lower Llewellyn Formation (= shale interval between an underlying coal unit in the Mammoth Bottom Split number 8 cycle and an overlying sandstone in the Mammoth Top Split number 9 cycle), middle to upper Desmoinesian, upper Middle Pennsylvanian

Locality: northern side / slopes of the Bear Valley Strip Mine, south of a sharp bend in Carbon Run, southwest of the town of Shamokin, southern Northumberland County, Western Middle Anthracite Coal Field, eastern Pennsylvania (vicinity of 40˚ 45’ 50.13" North latitude, 76˚ 35’ 42.85" West longitude)
