To carry such amultitude conveniently round them is the matter-of-factmotive of the gradual chiselling away, the softening of theangles, the graceful compassing of the Gothic base, till inour own Perpendicular period it all but disappears. Fig.60 shows that at Lindisfarne this lessening of the base iscarried still further, and only enough remains to avoid theharshness of a baseless column, and to establish the organicrelation between floor and pillar.
