[edit]DescriptionLungs of Gold.jpg |
English: Lungs of Gold is a children's book about a girl named Becca and her journey through the challenges of Cystic Fibrosis. Published on January 12, 2021, the book was written by Noa Ksabi (2022), Yael Schuller (2021), and Devorah Zhrebker (2021) and illustrated by Michal Reva (2021), assisted by Orly Cohen (2021). The five girls are students at Akiba Yavneh Academy of Dallas and organized the project through their school club, the Jewish Medical Action and Awareness Club (JMAAC).
Noa Ksabi, born October 28, 2003, is the founder and president of JMAAC, editor-in-chief of the club's counterpart site JMAACJournal (jmaacjournal.wordpress.org), and head of editing, publishing, and production of Lungs of Gold. When asked about their motivations regarding the book, she responded, "As a medical club in 2020, our options were limited. We couldn't shadow hospitals, visit patients, or observe any labs. Inspired by the challenges, we decided to write a children's book about Cystic Fibrosis, a cause near and dear to our hearts for multiple reasons." Ksabi continued to explain that Cystic Fibrosis affects 1 in 4 Ashkenazi Jews and is the most prevalent disease found amongst Jews. She also noted that the club's past experiences with Diane Shader smith speaking at their school and their reading of Mallory Smith's Salt in my Soul was also a big factor in deciding to write about the disease. She continued, "We want kids to see themselves in artistic representation and see something that relates to what they are going through. That's why we are donating and distributing these books to hospitals around the country." Michal Reva is the head illustrator of Lungs of Gold and one day hopes to pursue a career which incorporates her passion for graphic design with architecture. |
