Summary

English: Lighthouse in the distance with Battery Island in front.
The Battery Island's purpose was to guard the harbour entrance against sea attacks and to defend the town. This battery consisted of a curved stone wall on three sides with a rocky ridge on the fourth and 30 mounted cannons. The Island Battery, under the command of Captain de Gannes, held out till the end of the 1745 siege. A message had to be sent to the men on the island that the French had surrendered. |
