Description Lot 4499-15: Commander Richard E. Byrd’s First Antarctic Expedition, 1928-1930. A Strange Sight in the Waters of the Antarctic. The Byrd Expedition ship SS City of New York as she lay next to the Great Ice Barrier where the members of the party disembarked to plung into the mysterious wastes of the Antarctic. Note, the great height of the barrier as compared with the ship. September 1929. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. (2016/03/10).
