Description Lot-803-12: Aleutian Islands Campaign, June 1942 - August 1943. Allied Landing on Attu Island, May 11 1943. A Navy Combat Photography Unit was on hand when the first wave of American troops were put ashore at Japanese occupied Attu, the western-most island of the Aleutian chain. These photographs were taken during combined Army and Navy operations from the time the troops went over the side in Massacre Bay and in Holtz Bay. The photographer continued with the troops until they were in actual contact with the enemy. Many of these photographs were taken under Japanese fire.
