Summary

[edit]
Description Lot-801-36: Guadalcanal Campaign, 7 August 1942 – February 9 1943. “This Is Worse Than Fighting.” Platoon Sergeant John Basilone, USMC, awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Guadalcanal, wears a harried look as he relates his experiences to the press at the Navy Department, September 2, 1943. “This is worse than fighting,” he told the interviewing reporters. The Marine’s award was for his work in charge of the sections of heavy machine guns, when he risked his life to battle his way through Japanese lines to bring up shells for his gunners, “there contributing to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment.” Basilone later died at the Battle for Iwo Jima, February 19, 1945, during that D-Day invasion. U.S. Navy Photograph. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. (2015/11/06).
