Summary
[edit]DescriptionLooking down on the ruined Victorian Fernery - geograph.org.uk - 924269.jpg |
English: Looking down on the ruined Victorian Fernery The Fernery at Benmore Botanic Garden was built in the 1870s, and was set into the hillside. At the time when this photo was taken, the fernery was in a dilapidated condition (though, appropriately, the ruin was filled with ferns). It had been off-limits to the public for several years.
A winding footpath leading up the steep hillside passes close to the ruin; this provided the vantage point for the photo. A later photo shows restoration in progress: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1323801 (The fernery was built during the period of the Victorian "fern craze" - see e.g., chapter 2 of "A Natural History of Britain's Ferns", by C.N.Page.) |
