Description
English: London atlas of universal geography, by Edward Stanford, exhibiting the physical and political divisions of the various countries of the world. Vol. I. Bound in leather-covered board, with title on front cover in gilt. Spine title, in gilt: Stanford's atlas of universal geography. Covers interior has floral-patterned end papers and decorative border in gilt. Front cover verso includes book plate: Winifred Lucy Ashton / A. Wyon F., 1904. This edition, published in 1887, has 90 maps—spanning Vol. I and Vol II—covering the continents, countries, kingdoms and empires. Contains important new maps, including the North Pole, Malta, Cyprus, the approaches to the Black Sea, parts of Canada and Australia. Vol. I has 39 of the maps, as listed in the Contents, which appears in Vol. I, preceding the maps. Handwritten annotations therein mark the presence of Maps 1, 4, 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 34-36, 38, 40, 41, 45, 46, 48, 50-52, 55-57, 59, 61, 64-66, 71-77, 80, 84, 86, 88 and 90, as well as the Index.
