Sir Walter Scott, in the last chapter of Wavcrlcy, while alluding to theimperceptible gradations by which national and political changes arc wrought,remarks, Like those who drift down the stream of a deep and smooth river, weare not aware of the progress we have made until we fix our eye on the nowdistant point from which we have been drifted. As with political changes, so is it with the topographical features of a country,a district, or a parish.
