The figure written with red paint onto the cut end of each of these logs states their timber volume. The volume of timber contained in a felled tree is determined by measuring the log's length and diameter with a yardstick. The number of board feet is then written onto the cut end of each log. Logs are commonly cut in even lengths which can measure from 8 to 16 feet long with an extra 4 inch customarily added for the trim. If diameter and length of a log are known a log scale can be consulted, which helps to determine the volume. |
