ver andparrot fish can be had at one draw. Drift-wood from America and Japan iseverywhere washed up high and dry on thebeach. The skeleton of a sperm whale was onSand Island, and may be there yet. A treesix feet in diameter was also on Sand Island. Late in the afternoon of the day followingour arrival, we descried a sail to the eastwardof the islands. It appeared so small we cameto the conclusion that it was a boat from someshipwreck that was endeavoring to find an en-trance. During the night we started a fire onone of the hills, or sand dunes, to attract theirattention. Next morning we were surprisedto see a schooner making for the entrance, andin a few hours she anchored close to us. Itproved to be the schooner Chas. B. Wilsonof San Francisco. Captain Milander, a navi-gator well known in the North Pacific, com-manded her. We went on shore together andhad a look at the old house. used to use for our seat, but in a few momentshe suddenly rushed out, saying, I could notstay there! It feels like a living tomb! (Inever entered it afterwards.) After getting asupply of fish and water, he left for San Fran-cisco. It seems curious that we should have hadto stay fourteen months before a vessel arriv-ed, when we so sadly needed one; and now,when not in need, a vessel calls here the nextday. Such is the eternal cussedness of thingsin this world! We spent ten days on Midway, during whichtime we sank a fine well with the casks, with acover on the top to prevent it getting chokedwith sand. A notice board was placed on thehouse, to direct visitors where they could ob-tain water. Then, with a good supply of fish,curlew, and water, we prepared for sea. We did not forget to arrange the graves andput up some planks to mark the last restingplace of those who had died on the island dur-ing our fourteen months imprisonment.
