Summary
[edit]DescriptionLoess Plains (south of Maxwell, Nebraska, USA) 5.jpg |
English: The hills in the distance are part of the "Loess Plains" of Nebraska. "Plains" implies a planar or level landscape. The irregular topography is the result of erosion and dissection.
"Loess" refers to wind-blown silt deposits. The silt was usually derived from glacial sediments in ancient rivers that drained melting summertime glaciers during the Pleistocene Ice Age. Some loess deposits consist of silt derived from non-glacial sources. Ancient loess deposits that have been lithified into siltstones are called "paleoloess" or "loessite". Note: "loess" is pronounced "luhss". Info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loess |
