A pine forest has a relatively open character, with spaced trees and lack of underbrush.

Big Hole National Battlefield Site. A contemporary view shows the open character of the lodgepole forest in the siege area. Lodgepole pines were important both as a resource for the Nez Perce and as an element in battle. The spacing of trees and lack of underbrush allowed views and lines of fire into and out of the area during the battle. The patterns of forestation reinforce the historic scene. This is one of the vegetation patterns contained within the landscape, following patterns of the site's topography.
