Local train in New South Wales on the Toronto branch line at the far end of Toronto Station around 1904.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Toronto c1904. This image shows the local train on the Toronto branch line at the far end of Toronto Station around 1904. The Toronto branch opened in 1891 and branched off the Main Northern line at Fassifern station, south of Newcastle, then followed the shores of Fennell Bay through Blackalls and then onto Toronto. The end of the line was located close to the shore of Toronto Bay. The line was initially owned by the Excelsior Land Company, later sold to the Toronto Hotel & Tramway Co. Early operation of the line was more akin to a steam tramway than a railway, with four small 0-6-0 locomotives from British Manufacturers Manning Wardle and Hudswell Clark operating 'trains' at various times in the early years. The image shows the Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 tank locomotive "Pigmy", purchased by the Toronto Hotel & Tramway Company from the Saywell Tramway & Estates Ltd in 1900 operating with a 'Bennett' passenger carriage. 'Pygmy' (Hudswell Clark 296 of 1887) worked the Toronto tramway for five or six years. The NSWGR took over the line in 1910 and for a short period NSWGT Steam Tram Motor 61A operated services on the line while it was rebuilt to railway standard. The much loved line continued to operate until 1990
