Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Acanthocercus atricollis, commonly known as the Red-headed Agama or Rainbow Agama, is a species of lizard found in sub-Saharan Africa, including Uganda where Queen Elizabeth National Park is located. Red-headed Agamas are known for their striking coloration. Males typically have a bright red head, which contrasts with their greenish to brownish body coloration. Females and juveniles are less colourful, often displaying shades of brown or olive.

They inhabit a variety of habitats including savannas, rocky outcrops, and open woodlands. They are often found in areas with ample sunlight where they can bask and thermo regulate effectively. Red-headed Agamas are diurnal (active during the day) and are often seen basking on rocks or tree branches to absorb heat. They are agile climbers and use their strong limbs and claws to navigate rocky terrain.

They are insectivorous, feeding primarily on insects such as ants, beetles, and grasshoppers. They may also consume small invertebrates and occasionally plant matter. Red-headed Agamas have specialized scales that help regulate their body temperature and protect against predation. Their ability to change colour slightly depending on environmental conditions helps them blend into their surroundings.
