Summary

[edit]
Description

This fat, happy member of the family Megachilidae primarily pollinates Opuntia species, like the Opuntia humifusa above. All of the pricklypear at Frenchman's Forest Natural Area have several of these cool bees buzzing around them as soon as the flowers open each morning. Female leaf cutter bees, instead of storing pollen in leg baskets (like honeybees), have a very furry abdomen that collects and stores pollen grains. This explains their crazy crawling and swimming antics on flowers. This hard working mother is a solitary bee and she raises her young on her own. She will mix the pollen with a little nectar to make "bee loaves" to feed her young! www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/pollinator-of-the-m... My little video of Lithurgus pollinating lives here:
