Title |
Lithic Implement: Palaeolithic Acheulian unifacial pointed handaxe |
||
Description |
English: Lithic implement: Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian unifacial pointed (triangular) handaxe created by reworking a large waste flake. The butt-end of the axe has evidence of platform preparation, which would have helped to ensure that the flake could be actually struck off from the flint nodule. The ventral surface is smooth and flat, except for several flaking scars created through the process of knapping the flake from a nodule of flint. Previous flakes had been removed from the dorsal surface before the flake was struck from the flint nodule. This has left a series of ridges with impact ripples on the surface. After the flake was removed from the nodule, the dorsal surface was retouched with semi-abrupt removals with feather terminations to create its triangular shape. There is a small amount of abrupt retouch on the ventral surface along one edge. The axe has a sub-triangular cross section, which is thicker towards the butt end. The axe was knapped from mid-grey flint, and there is a small amount of natural cortex adhering to the tip. Despite its age, the surface of the axe is unpatinated. The axe is 91.24mm long, 53.82mm wide, 20.12mm thick and weighs 96 grams. |
