Title
Lithic : Palaeolithic
Description
English: A complete flint biface handaxe of lower to upper Palaeolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). The lithic is sub-triangular/pointed ovate in profile. The upper surface has invasive stepped flaking across approximately 2/3 of the surface. There is retained cortex across approximately 1/3 of the dorsal surface situated at the proximal end. The distal, left and right hand edges contain semi-abrupt retouch. The lower surface is predominantly convex and has been invasively flaked, across the majority of the surface. A minor amount if cortex is retained along the left proximal edge.

The flint is grey with an orangey brown patination and brown and cream inclusions throughout. The cortex is a light creamy brown in colour.

This lithic was recovered from a gravel pit from which several other chert implements including a large Levallois flake. The deposit from which the object was recovered is situated on a terrace of the Axe Valley gravels.
