English: An illustration from Francis F. Browne's 1886 work The Every-day Life of Abraham Lincoln. The scene depicts a young Captain Lincoln protecting a Potawatomi from his own men during the 1832 Black Hawk War. The story has been often repeated as an illustration of Lincoln's moral character.
