But Lincolns sympathy and tolerance,his forgiveness, his distaste for personalcontention, his lack of resentment, his among his nominal supporters whose zealled them into positions of open or con-cealed antagonism. The opposition to himin his own party was much more intensethan is generally known to the presentgeneration.
