On the con-trary, the fact that he made the attemptscounts in his favor, and to-day especially LINCOLN THE LEADER 491 endears him to multitudes of his country-men, and is one of the very bonds thathold the country together. But Lincolns sympathy and tolerance,his forgiveness, his distaste for personalcontention, his lack of resentment, his among his nominal supporters whose zealled them into positions of open or con-cealed antagonism. The opposition to himin his own party was much more intensethan is generally known to the presentgeneration.
