Limestones in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA. This is an outcrop of the Middle to Upper Mississippian Slade Formation in Kentucky. The unit was formerly known as the Newman Limestone ("They always change the names to protect the innocent!"). Slade Formation limestones are shallow ocean deposits. Underlying the Slade is the Borden Formation (not visible in this shot), which is a deltaic succession. The Borden-Slade contact is a significant disconformity - the entire Middle Mississippian is missing. This includes the lower Slade Formation (the Renfro Member is gone). Pennsylvanian-aged Corbin Sandstone (not visible in this shot) disconformably overlies the Slade Formation in this area. Stratigraphy: Slade Formation, Upper Mississippian Locality: roadcut next to the Route 1274-Route 801 intersection, southwest of the town of Morehead, Kentucky, USA. (vicinity of 38° 04’ 51.58” North latitude, 83° 25’ 21.64” West longitude) |
