Limekiln, Plane Tree Farm

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Limekiln, Plane Tree Farm. This limekiln dates from the 18c and was used to reduce stone to its pure form for use as a fertiliser. Most farms had their own kiln and used local stone but it is said the finest lime came from stone quarried from near the Limekiln House, an inn on the old drove which is mentioned by name in a paper dated 1575. The use of lime enabled many intake fields to be won notably during the late 17th and 18th centuries. It took a ton of local coal to burn four tons of limestone. This probably fertilised about an acre. In this kiln wood could well have been used instead of coal.
