[edit]DescriptionLifting the Siege (32222487617).jpg |
The city of Derry/Londonderry was besieged and as the people within starved they cried out for help from outside. After several failures the boom was attacked and broken bringing relief to the citizens. This appears to be a photograph by Mr. French of a painting representing the breaking of the boom. The general consensus is that the ship to the rear (guns blazing) is the HMS Dartmouth - firing upon coastal positions. While the ship to the fore is the merchant ship Mountjoy - which broke the boom across the Foyle. And ultimately sailed with its cargo of food to Derry - lifting the siege.….
