My dear John is always engrossedwith some study or other; he is remarkably well, and is whollydevoted to Latin and Greek. I know not, nor does he know himself,exactly what he will ultimately be, but either a clergyman or a phy-sician. He is brushing up for Cambridge; this I regret, but it is aselfish feeling; I cannot bear to part with him. I live a life of moresolitude than you would suspect for the midst of London, and insuch a pursuit, so wide a field as the arts. My son Charles * isreturned from the East Indies ; the voyage has been a hard one,but it is all for the best. All his visionary and poetic ideas of thesea and a seamans life are fled, the reality only remains; anda sad thing the reality is. But in the huge floating mass there isan order, and an habitual good conduct, which must be of advan-tage to a youth of ardent mind, and one who has never been con-trolled. Charley is preparing for
