Text Appearing Before Image:
of Yarmouth into the bargain. I dined the other day with , to be introduced to a lady paintress, with whom I should be much pleased, I found a laugh-ing, ignorant, fat, uncouth old woman, but very good-natured,and she gave me no trouble as she wanted no instruction fromme. When she told me of an oil proper for painting, I told herit would not do, but she assured me it would, and that she couldgive me no greater proof of it than that one of her pictures waspainted entirely with it. Constable exhibited but one picture this year— A Boatpassing a Lock. The scene of this subject is close to FlatfordMill, and was often painted by him from different points of view.An early picture of it, in which the lock is on the right of theforeground, forms one of the most complete subjects of theEnglish Landscape. The little wooden bridge, a principalfeature in the engraving entitled the River Stour, Suffolk, ishere introduced at a greater distance, with the whole of the pic-turesque cottage near it.

Dear Fisher,—I have just deposited my picture in its place, and opposite, and as a companion to, one by Mrs. .* To what honours are some men born ! . . . My Frenchmanhas sent his agent with the money for the pictures ; they are nowready, and look uncommonly well, and I think they cannot fail tomelt the stony hearts of the French painters. Think of thelovely valleys and peaceful farmhouses of Suffolk forming part ofan exhibition to amuse the gay Parisians. My Lock is liked atthe Academy, and indeed it forms a decided feature, and its lightcannot be put out, because it is the light of nature, the mother ofall that is valuable in poetry, painting, or anything else where anappeal to the soul is required. The language of the heart is theonly one that is universal; and Sterne says he disregards allrules, but makes his way to the heart as he can. But my execu-tion annoys most of them, and all the scholastic ones. Perhaps
