with all my things. I seem foolishly bent on a large canvas. I was at Wilkies all day on Monday ; he has painted a noble picture, Columbus with the Monk, when he shows him his plan for overtaking another world. Constable had been asked by Wilkie to sit for one of theheads in the picture of Columbus, that of the physician, GarciaFernandez. Among his papers I found a slight pencil sketchof the whole composition of that fine picture, no doubt madefrom recollection while describing the subject to some friend.Wilkie also asked Constable to sit to him for a portrait, and itis much to be regretted that he declined doing so. The following letter to Mr. Dunthorne accompanied a presentof Mr. Lucass large engravings of The Lock and TheCorn Field :— My dear Friend,—I hope you will receive the printssafe. Mr. Lucas bids me tell you that he shall send two more • From Crabbe. It is the soul that sees, &c. Constable made use of this inthe third lectnre he delivered at the Royal Institution.

I will take great care of them, and send them safe back toyou soon. I am about an ash or two now. The prints will cometo you from Flatford, as I have sent a pair to Abram. Yours very truly, John Constable,Charlotte Street, February \a,th. March. My dear Leslie,—Our friend Bonner* is on his way tobid my children good-bye, at Hampstead. He is going toGermany, whence his family originates, and he cannot leaveEngland without shaking you by the hand. I have been whollyshut up, so much so that I do not know what is going on sinceyou have been here. My picture must go, but it is wonderfully deficient in places. Yesterday Mr. called, and though he said perhaps it is a little better, yet
