ea true impression of his character as an artist without making thereader intimately acquainted with him in the private relationsof life. XX PREFA CE. The series of enoravings from his pictures and sketchesentitled English Landscape, formed a work which, to use thewords of Coleridge, was a secret committed to the public, and veryfaithfully kept. These plates will, therefore, to most eyes be new. Their subjects are all connected with Constables personalhistory, and the permission that has been obtained to make useof them, enables me to adorn a volume, chiefly from his pen, withsome beautiful productions of his pencil. I must here offer my thanks to the members of his family, and to others of my friends, for much valuable assistance in a task which I have only undertaken from the fear that if I did not engage in it, it would perhaps be deferred until many particulars of his life remaining only in the memories of those who knew him intimately, might be lost. East Bergholt, or, as its Saxon derivation implies, WoodedHill, is thus mentioned in the Beauties of England and Wales : South of the church is Old Hall, the manor-house, the seat ofPeter Godfrey, Esq., which, with the residences of the rector, theRev. Dr. Rhudde, Mrs. Roberts, and Golding Constable, Esq.,give this place an appearance far superior to that of most villages.It is pleasantly situated in the most cultivated part of Suffolk, ona spot which overlooks the fertile valley of the Stour, which riverseparates the county on the south from Essex.
