Cetteville est au-delà du Vésuve ; elle est à deux mj ria-mètres ( quatre lieues ) de Napîes. l56 LETTRES barques qui la sillonnent, ces vents quila tourmentent, cette île de Caprée quila termine, et enfin ce brillant soleil,qui, tous les jours , pour aller dun rivage à lautre, passe tout cela forme un tableau, une situation, unenchantement quil est impossible derendre. Jarrive à Naples , et déjà je conçoisque Virgile a composé à Naples sesGéorgiques ; que des hommes sensibleset délicats , la comparant cà une bellevierge , lont appelée Parthenope ; jeconçois , enfin, quils lui ont donné lesurnom doisive. Eh! quy a-t-il àfaire à Naples , si ce nest de jouir etde vivre ?

SIR L ITALIE. 57 LETTRE XCIV. A Naples. Le château de Capo-di-Monte mé-rite moins sa réputation que son nom. Il prend fantaisie, un jour, à je nesais quel roi de Naples, de placer unchâteau sur la crête de la montagne àlaquelle est adossé Naples. On creuse,onporte despierres, on taille, on élève,on couvre. On aperçoit alors que tout cevaste édifice pose entièrement sur unecarrière ; et on a recours , pour le sou-tenir, à des travaux prodigieux. Enfin,quand lédifice peut tenir debout, ondécouvre quil ny a point deau auxenvirons, point de chemin facile pourles voitures ; que le château est éloignéde tout. On lahandonne. Seulement onjette dans les appartements des poignées o 1/ l58 LETTRES de livres, on accroche aux muraillesquelques centaines de taLleaux ; on éta-blit un médaillier dans une salle; etvoilà le château devenu musée. Vousriez ! Avez-vous fini le Louvre ? Le château de Capo - di - Monte nemériterait guère la peine que les étran-gers sont obligé
