[edit]DescriptionLetter to Hamo Thornycroft proposing bust of Sir George Stokes GGS pages 1 and 4.jpg |
Pembroke College, Cambridge February 6, 1897 Dear Sir, I believe it has been communicated to you that a project has been set on foot for securing a Bust of Sir G. G. Stokes, which may hand down to posterity his finely chiselled features, and may be a worthy memorial of one who for sixty years has been a member of our College & of our University, & who, besides holding a high place in the esteem & affection of Cambridge men, is regarded also with special honour by scientific men in England & throughout Europe & America. At a meeting held here last Wednesday, this project took shape, in the appointment of a committee & the establishment of a fund, with this object in view - & we are authorised to write to you to ask whether you will be willing to undertake this work of executing a Bust in marble of Sir G. G. Stokes, with a views to its being presented in our College Hall, in which your beautiful Bust of Gray meets with universal admiration. We are also requested also to ask you what is your charge for such a Bust. Further a wish has been expressed that, if the general project receives sufficient support, besides the Bust to be placed in the hall a ‘replica’ might be executed at the same time to be given to the university for presentation in the Fitzwilliam Museum or elsewhere. Would you then kindly let us know what would be the further charge for such a ‘Replica’? We sincerely hope that you will be willing to undertake the work. We have learned that it will be very agreeable to Sir G. G. Stokes himself & to his family if you will do so. Yours truly C. H. Prior |
