Notes letter from 2nd Lieutenant Leonard James Shaw (7-1323 2nd Auckland Infantry Battalion), Officers' Mess, Trentham, NZ, 15.4.1918, to his niece Jessie Osborne, Opuatia (near Mercer). Letter written on Officers' Mess letterhead. Letter contents- a) refers to gift of two beautiful bags from Jessie "the orderly has both bags hanging up on the wall, so contrary to thinking them funny, he evidently thinks them very useful. I like the one with the cat looking in the glass the better. The other is very good but I think the cat splendid - the scent and things look so tricky to." b) ref. journey to Trentham, started Friday morning and arrived Saturday at noon - "I enjoyed the march quite well. At Kaitoke we had a big camp fire in the evening and round it we held a concert - c) camp life - "Since returning I have been in charge of our Company. It made a terrible lot of work at first but it is not quite so bad now. Still it does still take a lot of spare time that would otherwise be free, particularly as we are so short of officers. I still have to do the bulk of the platoon work. I expect to be relieved of the Coy. work any day. d) ref. departure - date not known, but probably first Saturday in May. e) photos not yet to hand. GENERAL NOTES- While serving overseas during WW1 Len Shaw (2nd Lieutenant Leonard James Shaw, 7-1323, 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment) of Opuatia near Mercer, corresponded with his niece Jessie Osborne (then aged 12-14 years). Among the letters she received is a letter enclosing a pressed poppy he had picked in the front-line trenches. Len Shaw was killed in action France on 29.9.1918. His brother Leslie Shaw wrote home describing the circumstances of his brother's death.
