Les Moitiers-d'Allonne (Manche) Entre les caps de Carteret et celui du Rozel, s'étale, sur 400 hectares, le puissant massif dunaire d'Hatainville. Il s'élève à 86 mètres en recouvrant d'anciennes falaises vieilles de plus de 70000 ans. Les sables des dunes d’Hatainville s’appuient sur une falaise fossile de grès et de schistes. Cette formation de « dunes perchées », dont certaines culminent à 80 m, est l’une des plus spectaculaires d’Europe. Elle est née, notamment, de la remontée progressive du niveau marin après la dernière glaciation, voici 12 000 ans. Le massif dunaire présente une grande diversité : des dunes basses ou hautes (culminant à 86 m !), sèches ou humides (25 hectares de mares et de dépressions inondables), dunes vives (dont les formes ne sont pas stabilisées faute de végétation) et dunes blanches (presque sans couverture végétale), dunes grises (couvertes de végétation basse) et landes. Diversité qui s’accompagne d’une richesse de la faune(triton crêté, crapaud calamite...) et de la flore (oeillet de France, gentiane amère, pyrole à feuilles rondes, littorelle...) Des dunes, autrefois mobiles, ont été stabilisées par l'édification de clôtures en bois et la plantation massive d'oyats.
