Summary
[edit]DescriptionLeeds dark arches - geograph.org.uk - 1018323.jpg |
English: Leeds dark arches One of Leeds engineering wonders of the Victorian era. A staggering 18 million bricks and stones hold up these vaulted arches for City station. Construction began in 1866 and the station was completed in 1869. The New station was built upon arches which span the River Aire, Neville Street and Swinegate.
Medieval dams & the 'Kings mill goits' originate from the river Aire higher up. The trained eye can spot where the great fire of 1892 brought the station crashing down into the canal basin below. |
