bouleversée quon apprécie ces utiles ani-maux. Il est merveilleux en effet de les voir poser avecfermeté leur large sabot sur les rochers les plus glis-sants, sarrêtant à chaque obstacle et ne levant jamaisun pied que lorsque léquilibre est complet sur les troisautres. Le pays que nous traversions est dun aspect étrangeet saisissant. Tant quon gravit les flancs de la montagne,lœil effaré ose à peine mesurer ces énormes blocs decalcaire qui semblent suspendus sur vos têtes, tandisquà vos pieds labîme est là ouvrant sa bouche im-mense. Mais, au moindre plateau, se révèle toute lavigoureuse fertilité de cette terre; des bouquets darbressidancent droits et forts du sein de quelque oasis inat-tendue ; des mousses, des caroubiers à végétation fan-tastique, des chênes rabougris à feuilles teintées dunvert .sombre, des aloès aux branches épineuses sortant despierres comme des géants armés pour vous couper laroute, et leau tombant en gouttes scintillantes des blocs

Iilsiiiinijiïiïïisiiiiiiii li LE TOUR DU MONDE. (Je granit verdis par les lichens; tels apparaissent ii ))tiiprès tous ces petits asiles de verdure. Après deux heures dune ascension pénible et fati-gante nous arrivâmes au monastère. Ganuubin est, comme on sait, la demeure halntuelledu patriarche et le siège de la religion maronite; sonnom vient du mot grec latinisé Cœnobium, qui veut direle monastère par excellence. Cest im bâtiment assez irrégulier, qui nest à projire-ment parler ni un couvent, ni une mosquée. Taillé enpartie dans le rocher sm- lequel il est bâti, il na depittoresque que son emplacement. Léglise dédiée àla Aierge sous le titre de Sainte-Marie de Cauoubin,est toute petite et manque complètement de caractèreet de goût. Le reste consiste en cellules pour les reli-gieux et en saltes communes, y compris lappartementdu patriarche.
