Le Metrosideros speciosa appartient àlafamiliedes myrlacées; I forment autour des ramilles comme un manchon feutré dun rougecest un bel arbrisseau de trois à quatre mètres délévation, aux ( ponceau très-vif; en tombant, ce manchon laisse sur le rameau quibranches longues, minces , tortueuses et le plus souvent pendan- ; lui sert daxe des graines adhérentes àlécorce. Le Jardin des plan-tes, aux feuilles dures, coriaces, lancéolées et alternes. Les fleurs ; tes possède plusieurs pieds de ce spécimen de la flore australienne.

Cétait là que le troupeau devait être vendu àun squatter dAdélaïde. Ils y arrivèrent (;uinze joursaprès avoir quitté le Lachlan. La traversée du Murray,large en cet endroit dun demi-kilomètre, couronne di-gnement ce grand voyage. Un grand nombre de sauvages étaient campés sur lesbords du fleuve et avaient des canots tout prêts pouraider les voyageurs à le traverser. Les tribus du Mur-ray et du Darling sont aujourdhui les plus nombreusesen Australie, particulièi ement celles du Darling ; aussilon entend encore quelquefois parler de déprédationscommises par eiLX dans des stations écartées. Il y aquelques années seulement, dans une station située surcette rivière, une tribu de noirs enleva un troupeau demoutons. Le châtiment ne se fit pas attendre : ils étaientenviron trois cents festoyant autour dun véritable car-nage
