Peinture du Printemps au centre du plafond du salon du même nom Palais Farnèse de Caprarola, Italie Cette salle, située à l'étage des Prélats, est une de celles consacrées aux saisons, c'est la pièce du Printemps et de la célébration du renouveau de la Nature. Au plafond, le Printemps est figuré en enfant (putto) portant une couronne de myrte, la plante sacrée de Vénus, ce qui évoque la saison des amours. Il tient trois fleurs de lys violettes en référence au blason des Farnese. À ses pieds, une corne d'abondance vide (le printemps n'a pas encore apporté ses fruits) mais d'où s'échappe de la vapeur et dont l'interprétation n'est pas claire (évocation du sommeil de la Nature qui se réveille ?). La corne d'Abondance apparait plusieurs fois sur les peintures du palais Farnese (voir aussi le salon de Jupiter) Le palais Farnese de Caprarola a été conçu par l'architecte Jacopo Birozzi Vignola, connu sous le nom de Vignola, en 1555 pour le cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589), petit-fils du Pape Paul III, le Pape qui a confié la réalisation de la Chapelle Sixtine à Michel-Ange. Il a fait appel aux meilleurs artistes de son époque dont beaucoup travaillaient déjà pour la Papauté. Ce palais de style Renaissance, construit entre 1555 et 1575, a remplacé un projet de forteresse située au sommet d'une arête rocheuse dont les fondations de forme pentagonale ont été conservées par l'architecte.
