Le marché de Binh Thay a été fondé en 1930 par un négociant chinois dans le quartier commerçant de Cho Lon. Les marchands sont regroupés par secteur. Il y règne une activité intense et les touristes doivent rester discrets.

Certains commerçants pratiquent une "banque dite noire".
