Description

Autel du sanctuaire supérieur accessible par la Porte chinoise.

Seules les personnalités de très haut rang avaient le droit de venir dans le coeur du sanctuaire. Il est protégé symboliquement par des animaux sacrés : dragons et lions chinois.

Cette partie du sanctuaire est actuellement en cours de restauration

Le temple Nikkô Tôshô-gû fait partie du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Construit par Tokugawa Hidetada (1579-1632) pour son père Ieyasu, il a été embelli par le petit-fils du second, Iemitsu (1604-1651). Une fois divinisé, Ieyasu est connu sous le nom de Daigongen "Le grand Gongen, lumière de l'Est"; et le style d'architecture du mausolée est aujourd'hui appelé gongen-zukuri, le style Gongen.
