Description

Comme beaucoup de château fort d'Alsace, cette citadelle dominait la vallée d'Andlau et de

la Kirneck pour se préparer à d'éventuels combats. Cela fut utile pendant plusieurs siècles mais Louis XIV en décida autrement après avoir signer les traités de Westphalie mettant fin à la guerre de 30 ans et au rattachement de la région à la France. En effet, le roi soleil, en détruisant une bonne part des châteaux d'Alsace, souhaitait amoindrir la puissance de ces places fortes pour se protéger des révoltes des nobles locaux.
