Description

Edifié en 1563 (ou 1566 selon les différentes sources) par le roi Setthatirat lors du transfert de la capitale de Luang Prabang à Vientiane, ce vat est le plus populaire de la cité. Il abrite le pilier de la ville Lak Muang, sa forme phallique dénote de l'importance du culte de la fécondité.

Selon la légende le temple aurait été construit sur un trou dans lequel se serait sacrifiée une femme enceinte, une statue de Bouddha entourant le pilier aurait des pouvoirs bénéfiques sur l'enfantement.
