한국어: 르 코르뷔지에는 인체를 바탕에 둔 조화로운 척도체계를 만들기 위해 정사각형, 원, 직삼각형과 같은 기본 도형들과 황금비를 이용해서 비례 격자를 만드는데, 그 과정에서 각각의 치수들이 피보나치(Leonardo Fibonacci, 1180 추정~1250 추정)의 수열공식을 형성하고 있음을 발견했다. 또한, 이렇게 만들어진 비례 격자 속에 키가 육 피트인 사람이 왼팔을 들고 있는 모습을 집어넣어서 인체의 각 부분과 피보나치수열의 치수들을 정확하게 연관 지으려 하였다. 이를 통해 르 코르뷔지에는 기하학과 비례, 그리고 인체를 통합하는 새로운 척도체계를 만들어 냈다. 르 코르뷔지에의 모듈러는 르네상스 이후의 다양한 비례체계와도 완전히 다른 것으로 현대적인 시공간 개념을 반영하고 있다. 르 코르뷔지에는 모듈러를 발견한 이후 그것을 자신의 건물 설계에 계속해서 적용햇다. 모듈러는 무한한 조합이 가능했기 때문에 어떤 건물에도 사용이 가능했다. 특히 르 코르뷔지에의 전후 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 프랑스의 롱샹 성당, 라 투렛 수도원, 그리고 인도 샹디갈의 주요 공공건물들에서 모듈러는 가장 기본적인 척도체계로 사용되었다.
